SAPS: Is it biology or is it chemistry?
In this session we will be looking at some of the resources from SAPS and will cover:
  • Plants need chemicals
  • how to make your own plant food
  • which seeds to use
  • how seedlings need different chemicals for good growth
Can we extract oil from olives? Can we find out what the pH of a leaf is? Do plants have reactions? How to use equipment which may have been sitting in the back of cupboards for ears will also be included.

Understanding chemistry through microscale practical work
Microscale chemistry allows students to carry out practicals more quickly, safely, and cheaply, and allows for better observations, leading to improved skills development and understanding of chemical ideas. I'll discuss some common practicals that can be used immediately in the classroom and highlight some of the cheap and easy to make equipment that can be used.

Recommended resources include the new book Understanding Chemistry Through Microscale Chemistry, which will be available in the ASE/Millgate Bookshop during Conference or online at www.millgatehouse.co.uk
